Great Value

WE were having coffee that afternoon when she told me that I was “great value”. It was supposed to be a compliment. Here is what I felt after hearing her refer to me as “great value”:

1. I am a car
2. or maybe a watch
3. or maybe a necklace
4. or maybe a two weeks vacation in Hawaii
5. or maybe a house in santa barbara downtown
6. or maybe a cow
7. or maybe a boat
8. or maybe a specialist in weapons capable of destroying everything everywhere

Was she aware, when she refered to me as "great value", that at her eyes I was just some kind of merchandise that could be soon or later put on sale? I'm sure she was. But why did it take me so long to understand it?
